Improvement

After crit on Monday I decided to push my concept a bit further. I started collaging and made butterflies out of waste like sweet wrappers, food packaging, bin bags, tin foil, newspaper etc.

Illegal Dumping

I decided to do my set of stamps on Illegal Dumping and Littering. It is a big problem in Ireland at the moment and I want to draw attention to it. I took some photos first and did some research into it.
I found that cigarettes make up 56% of litter in Ireland while chewing gum makes up 25%.

While researching old Irish stamps I came across the set of Irish butterflies. I thought they would make an interesting stamp if they were modernised and more styalised so I looked into facts about Irish butterflies. I found that their numbers are decreasing becuase their habitiats are being destroyed. This is another effect of dumping and littering.

My Stamps for the first Crit..

I tried to reverse the colours for this one.. put the bright colours of a butterfly on the rubbish and have the butterfly in black and white.

Environmental Issues

Prezi - http://prezi.com/jecgbfhsmf68/stamp-research/

After doing some research online into poster design I found a few very interesting and successful poster ideas for Global Warming etc.

This is my favourite, its so simple, and works so well in getting the message across.

Research

This week is all about research. Picking a topic and finding out as much as possible about it. We'll be presenting our research and ideas next Tuesday.

New Blog

I'm half way through my first week of Visual Communication Design. Our brief is to create  4 postage stamps which encourage or promote energy conservation, or bring attention to any environmental issue. I made a mindmap of all the issues I could think of and then began to research the ones I found most interesting. Global warming, habitat destruction, light pollution, species extinction, ways to conserve energy, illegal dumping, renewable energy.. the list is endless!

I went home and found my Dads old stamp collection and had a look through these for inspiration and research into the idea of a postage stamp. It was hard to find one that had a concept behind it, as a poster or advertisment would. They mostly marked an occasion or event such as an Olympics, or illustrated a type of animal or transport.

I put together a collage of the ones I found most interesting.

These are ones I thought would be inspiration for the theme of the brief.
